The phone rang last Friday with a familiar voice on the other end... Jane asked, " Are you available to shoot the Christmas production at Liberty?" Sure was, so after a full weekend and running a 5k... I geared up and shot the Christmas celebration Sunday evening. Getting the inside scoop in hearing the creative planning, I knew it was going to be a good one. What talent the Liberty folks share with the community!

There were surprises and twists to the night as our human shortcomings were challenged! One guy was dressed as a homeless man with a sign, Homeless Need Help Please! He wasn't treated very nicely as he wondered through the crowds before the Production began... only for people to find him walk up on stage and sing with an amazingly deep passionate voice... audible gasps were heard throughout the audience. Really made One examine the heart...

Watched Blue People being made up. Incredible talent playing drums or should I say, trash cans, pipes, fencing, and anything else they could bang on!

Movement, talent, timing, lighting, and so much more played a role in a very successful Christmas Celebration! I loved the lighting and action... a photographers dream. Tina called, asking if I could photograph she and Sean with his Harley for an engagement session. Obviously I was excited to do so... these guys will be getting married next week and were wanting some shots to use during the wedding. Fun, creative, relaxed, and very flexible... This is just one of a series of shots... what a blast! David and his band were all impressive people, can't wait to see them live July 15th and 16th in Williamsburg, Virginia. I was driving down the road after a long week of shooting and a wedding in Montross, Virginia.

All day Sunday I had a creative thought come to mind. Not much comes to mind usually after such a taxing week. I do love what I do and love being able to create! The biggest challenge I feel for a Professional Photographer in these digital days, are the unending hours of post production when a shoot is complete. Definitely a difference from the film days... I have had the opportunity to shoot many great things the last 4 weeks straight. I will be posting them soon! I did want to share with you the idea I had and see what you think... This is Shannon, she just married on 6th of September 2010. Shan has a heart for the kids in India. She and her husband want to help the kids that are trapped in sex trafficking with no hope of any good thing. They want to help them get out and come to know what true and right love is all about. They are ministers and want to reach these kids, giving them an opportunity to have a future and it be a good one! My idea for this shot was to capture Shannon's amazingly beautiful green eyes! The "eyes are the lamp into the soul". I love her piercing, illuminated green eyes and was trying to capture the emotion behind these eyes. Shannon is getting ready to take the huge step in her life, living out her passion becoming an Indian Woman in an Indian culture. With the loving help of her amazing husband Sam, I believe they will be very successful! This is a face for National Geo!

One could only hope to have the perfect wedding for their son or daughter! You wait a lifetime to see them marry! Royal weddings or those in Hollywood, would not have topped Jen and Michaels big day~ I have seen it all now! Jen and Michael have known each other since they were very little and never dreamed one day they would not only be best friends, but husband and wife. This was a story that only fairy tails are made of... I have to say the MOST BEAUTIFUL Bride on the planet looking prettier than a Princess... Michael was a pretty good Prince Charming himself! This couple shared so many things, from their love of friends and family, their passion for God, adventure and enjoying the simple things in life... one another's company and the joys of a great relationship. Jen and Michaels attention to detail, wanting all their guests to have the time of their lives made this special event not only spectacular but the event of the year! Jen began with all the preparations in Serenity Nail and Spa, followed by the wedding day getting hair done at Janet's Hair Salon. Pre-Wedding shots began for the ladies with planes and a red Corvette, thanks to Buz. The guys were working on their shots with a good friend and photographer Brad Howe, thanks Brad you rock!
I so appreciate so many of the Vendors! We were able to engage the NEW Williamsburg Photo Booth with Steven Daley. This was a HUGE hit with all the guests and made not only fun times for them but an album of hilarious memories for the Bride and Groom! Thanks Steven and Liz! All weddings and events should engage this New Venture as it will change the face of your event! Up lights were rented from Stage Right Lighting in Va. Beach and made a very nice reception turn into an elegant display of mood and emotion.
This beautiful little girl grew up right before my eyes and I am so proud of who she has become! This is my first born Niece and was honored to not only be apart of their day, but be able to capture their STORY and personality, the joys, and tears of the blessed union.

Norfolk Photographer~ A VERY Happy Birthday!

One can only hope to have such good family, friends, and husband! Donna had confirmation of what she already knew to be A+ in all the above! Her sweet husband Bob, spear headed a surprise birthday party from the other side of the world... Donna had no clue what he was up too. She arrives at her sister in laws, to find a crowd of people awaiting her celebration. Everyone could only hope this to be a real surprise! NO ONE was disappointed! Donna arrived and was more than shocked as she hesitated to make her entrance. Once inside, all greeted her including Bob her husband from the other side of the world through Skype. He was able to see her surprise and joy. Then came the best present of all... Bob had arranged to fly Donna's sister in from out of state and have her deliver His birthday card. I don't know if the room was more filled with tears or smiles as Donna turned around... no one would have expected her surprised reaction... SHOCK, laughter, tears, hugs, more tears, more hugs, more laughter! It was a great time had by all and an UNFORGETTABLE memory that will forever go down in history! Happiest of Birthdays Donna! Great job Bob and TEAM!

Richmond Photographer~A Pastors Adventure Through Prayer

I received a call from Pastor Wade Trump of Jamestown Christian Fellowship in Williamsburg, Virginia a few days ago. Wade wanted to know if I would be available to capture a very important moment for him...The Opening Prayer for January 26th session in the General Assembly. Of course he was excited and so was I, I was honored to be able to be apart of this exciting time for he and his wife Lisa.
So today we set off to Richmond, I decided even in the rain to document the day... All the people apart of this session were so friendly, from staff to the delegates themselves couldn't be more helpful and accepting of our presence. Delegate Brenda Pogge had opened the door for this day to come to pass. On the drive up a real sense of destiny or heritage was impressed upon me as my Grandmother who passed in 2010 had sat in those sessions for more than 60-70 years and only stopped last year or so as she was 98 years old.
Wade delivered a very powerful prayer for the families of those there, their protection, as well as asking God for guidance in making their decisions with integrity and wisdom. Many were touched and moved by the prayer that was very personal. Wade was graciously received and given a gift as he left the podium. What an opportunity! Great job Wade! You more than met all you felt you were to accomplish. Wade was fascinating to watch today as he asked if he could pray for everyone from parking security to all those along the way in his adventure. All were so open to him doing so and really appreciated it!

Here it is... the day that Caryn and Jeff had been planning for all year. Their special and most important day was unfolding! Outdoor weddings can always be nerve racking to plan, as one never knows if the weather will cooperate. The weather was amazing, everything just fell into place as hoped! I met with Caryn and Jeff the beginning of the year to book their wedding then to start the process of creating their story. We first discussed their e-session... they both love Williamsburg since they graduated from The College of William and Mary. I wanted to photograph them in Washington D.C. as I thought it would be fun to do both. They were wonderful and agreed to my proposal. It is always great to do an e-session with your photographer as it allows you time to become comfortable with the camera and allows your photographer to get to know you better and capture your personality.
The Wedding day began at The Kingsmill Resort Spa where the Bride and Bridesmaids were having their hair and make-up done... then to the room for preparation for the wedding. An elegant wedding, sweet ceremony surrounded by the most amazing view, flowers, family and friends. When all the planning, time, and effort goes into a wedding like this, all that is left to do is sit back and enjoy celebrating the day! Caryn and Jeff were great fun to spend the day documenting their new life together! Thanks for entrusting this most important day to me! Wish you all the best!

Alison and Josh made a cake topping couple! Beautiful people inside and out! Very interesting story, these two met while both their families were over seas as missionaries. This should encourage all future brides to be... don't give up! You never know where you might meet your future husband or wife.

I am honored to have been a part of this couples special day, as you can see we had a fun filled bridal session. On the beautiful horse farm of special friends to the family, the stables and pastures were as a painted backdrop! Wow, elegance mixed with the rustic tank and stable... I think you could have placed Alison in any scene and she would have made it breath-taking! What mood and emotion was captured when photographing Alison, she made my job easy! Hansen is a great young man who is incredibly talented! Heading out west to college with a promising future. He was all smiles and made photographing him a great deal of fun!

I have to say this wedding was truly FASTER THAN A HORSE RACE! I am not kidding, we are talking the ceremony was about 2 minutes max! A dream wedding for most guests, you think? Actually, Cheryl put a great amount of time and effort into planning her Colonial Downs wedding! She wanted to make sure those with health issues did not have to wait to eat... I don't know that any of them thought at the blink of an eye their beautiful grand daughter would be married and very happy too! She and Andrew had an exciting wedding, great location, many friends and family, and it really was a beautiful wedding! Congrats Cheryl and Andrew!

So excited and yet much to do yet... Let me see where to start. An Amazing Mountain trip to the Shenandoah National Park on Skyline Drive. The Resort called Skyland will be celebrating it's 75th Anniversary next year and am working with the Tourism to capture the breath-taking views.

Also, photographed two incredible people for their 20th Wedding Anniversary. Carol is probably more beautiful then she was 20 years ago. She slipped back into her wedding gown from that special day and time. Mike also handsome, adoring his wife and game for the idea of creating that Day all over again. These guys were great to work with making a warm day very picturesque. From Historic Williamsburg to College Creek Beach. Great emotion and fun to photograph! Thanks for trusting me to make your new memories in print :D

Tax Day Shoot was a change of photography and pace... photograph the Richmond Tea Party Rally of over 5,000 people plus. Very interesting actually! Not an angry mob, not bigots or racists, not all that have heard them to be... just very concerned citizens for our future. Seemingly all they want is little government and a future for their children and grandchildren. Keynote speaker Charles Payne was a man of integrity and character! An Incredible American! What testimony of his life and where he has come from and all the hope he spoke to the group. Very inspiring! Thanks Charles and nice to meet you and your beautiful wife!

Chris and Satoko were great fun to work with! The Historic area had a special

place in their hearts, as this was where Chris proposed to Satoko a few years before. They

had wanted to do some family shots as they will be leaving to move out of the country very soon.

While the very loving grandparents stayed with their two children to warm up at the Lodge, Chris, Satoko and I headed to the location that had been so romantic and special. As you can see it brought all the feelings and emotions back as if it were that special day! Great people and family! Thanks for entrusting me with your family session... I've been very busy and yet haven't blogged recently... bad bad girl! I have a few sessions that will be coming soon! Here is a cute little one that was photographed on Saturday morning early. She is a doll baby, I was her "personal photographer" as her Daddy calls me when she was just 5 days old. Here is little Seva at 6 months.

Here is Lisa, she is a student who will be competing in the Miss Virginia pageant in April... I really respect her! She is beautiful, studies very hard, has strong convictions which I think will be seen in the future even in our political arenas. Had a blast today Lisa! Good luck in April!

A day on the town!-Engagement

What a wonderful day on the town! From backyard havens, to beat up school houses, to the Colonial area, and to finish up with a refreshing Milk Shake! I believe it was banana split with caramel, cookie dough, and mounds more goodness in that shake shared by our soon to be married lovers... Aaron and Sara.

My New Nephew

Is this little guy cute or what! All my soon to be 8 year old niece wanted for her birthday was a new puppy. She did her research and wanted a male yorkshire terrier. Instead they found a silky and did she ever get the best birthday present! He has personality plus and has what they call the puppy sigh. He just so relaxes and rests in your arms. Weighing in at 2 lbs 11oz in the photo .... meet Charlie.

A beautiful brisk morning turned into an amazing gathering of crowds. A very humble and relaxed celebration with high praises, honoring of God and upholding the constitution. From swearing in to parade festivities, to the final walk to the New Governor's Mansion. The warmth of the day was felt by all. It became very apparent the LOVE the Governor and his wife share for one another, family, God and country! Governor Bob McDonnell carried his wife across the threshold of their new home in Richmond. They brought much joy and humor to a wonderful day! Congrats to you and your family!

What a wonderful surprise as I heard my name called out in a large crowd. It was some good friends coming to a see a great production! I had been photographing the cast and while waiting for the last few, my friends stood in so as not to allow the set to be lonely. The Christmas season has been a busy one for photography. Busy week and weekend... Not complaining at all!~ Week of shooting and Saturdays shoot was a change of pace. I was working with a wonderful realtor, Jolene. We are shooting for her new website and had some great people partnering with her to make this happen! One couple who were stunning to capture digitally while the sun was setting, it was icing on the cake for a photographer. They were a beautiful young married couple, Chris and Shavon... see for yourself!

Then a small wedding at the William and Mary College either finished out the weekend or started the new week. My handsome nephew and beautiful new niece! Congrats Micah and Caitlin!!! Love you both!

Great Family session as well! Rob and Fiona with their wonderful children! We had a good time enjoying the last of the warm weather! The sun had hidden permanently behind the clouds and daylight was quickly fading. The delays in preparation are known by too many brides, thank goodness for trial runs before the big day. There is always a bright side to everything or any kind of set back or delay. Meeting and working with Aaron and Sara brought about that bright lining to the very grey day! When approaching the site desired by the groom to be, we found a huge piece of farm machinery that had done it days work...all the corn in the field was gone!
Oh well, still made for a fun shoot! We were chasing what little light existed... so we had to create some light. I think for this wonderful couple being with each other made the day no matter what! Sara and Aaron were great to work with and such kind people. I see a great future ahead for these two!

A little piece of Heaven!

Just when you think Winter has arrived, then a wave of warmth fills the air. Leaves had just dropped the day before arriving in CT. There is the most beautiful red maple in the front of the most amazing New England farm. So many memories and so many more to make... all of it warms the heart and soul, the people chosen to take my parents place if anything had ever happened to them. Many hope only to have one set of great parents, but to have had two and three sets is a miracle. I was so blessed to be that person! Not only with great parents, but then to have incredible God-Parents is a wonderful thing... who can stand so much loving! The hills and rocks of CT stand strong and majestic as you wind through the roads, sometimes as if in a race hugging the curves. The fresh air and great company, the scenery and quaint towns are fuel to a driven person whose only down time is when asleep. One can not even receive cell phone calls. Talk about peace as well as peace of mind. Really makes One wonder what the heck am I doing working day and night? Oh yeah it is called a living... I really am passionate about it too! I do realize with the same passion I work, I need to have that same passion to relax and enjoy more of the little things in life that are really the biggest and most important...PEOPLE, those that are near and dear to us!

It's been an exciting and challenging session over the last week. I am shooting some photos for a state project and ran into this wonderful couple from Springfield. Family Time

What a busy week! Great new challenges and as many know, as a photographer one MUST be able to multi-task. Some days I just get to the multi part :D
DC on Friday, Commercial shoot on Saturday, and today was my Grandmother's 98th b-day celebration!
As a photographer you can't get away from family photography, especially when it is your own family.
My Mother requested a 5 generation photo and then my niece Jen wanted her family photographed.

This wedding was a thriller! You never knew what was waiting around the corner... never a dull moment. GREAT fun and have known and loved this family since I was a kid...
Ashley's Bridal Portrait taken from the Fire Station in Williamsburg. She wanted to be photographed on the antique fire engine her grandfather used, when he first was a fireman.

Mini Fisherman

Photo sessions always take an unexpected turn... who knew? The plan was to get a few shots of the little fisherman at the York River and then head to another location. Well, little mr Jason decided to not only fish... he became a soaked...sand covered model. He had a blast playing in the sand and getting sand in his mothers hair as well. So you guessed it.... photo session was over after this location... thanks Ami! He is a great kid, he's a lot of fun to shoot and play with too!

Cool Fall day today and still great time to have a family photo session at Yorktown Beach. Have known the family for several years now since shooting both Cate and Sarah's Weddings. Now they have children and what a blast! I spent most of the day laughing! These kiddos are a hoot!

I will be adding more in the next day, but wanted to get a few cute shots of Twins Taylor and Alex... also the newest addition to their family baby Logan. I think he must think Alex is his newest chew toy :D

Jessica and Scooby's "Upper Class" Photo Session

Memories of Red Carpet Moments

As I gathered sample images from my portfolio for my new site launch at http://www.kellymihalcoe.com/, so many memories came back of all the dignitaries I've photographed over time: Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Henry Kissinger, Queen Elizabeth II, and many more. I've had great opportunities! One thing that gained me favor with those in the great Red Carpet moments is so simple that many photographers neglect to do it--I made the effort to dress up, choosing not only to represent myself , but also to show respect to those I was to photograph. That respect caught their attention. Here are some of the stories.

When Henry Kissinger walked up the path to the venue, I was off the path in the grass. Mr. Kissinger walked off the path toward me, offered his hand, and introduced himself, "Hello, I am Henry Kissenger."

The first time I got a shot of Margartet Thatcher, I was in a crowd and there was a local college photographer dressed in jeans, shooting like a paparazzo. Mrs. Thatcher had a group surrounding her and I stood back, because it wasn't a good shot and I was waiting for my opportunity. Mrs. Thatcher stopped the conversation with the crowd, turned to me, and said, "would you like a photograph?" I said, "yes ma'am, I would." The crowd parted, and everyone knew it was my time to accept her invitation.

The second time I was assigned to photograph Mrs. Thatcher, I was specifically told for the assignment, "don't dress up for this." My thoughts were that I represent myself first, and that people deserve my respect. As I showed up, Mrs. Thatcher was in the luncheon with local dignitaries and I came walking up. Her assistant saw me and said in his warm Irish accent, "you're the smartest photographer I've seen," meaning I was nicely dressed. This exchange helped open the door and establish a nice rapport with them. Mrs. Thatcher got into the carriage, she leaned forward and gave me her wave.

I had special Secret Service clearance to do the shoot for 2007 visit of the Queen. We were told we could be in one spot and one spot only, but I've always held the theory that you should shoot for the stars, and be grateful for the moon. So, I negotiated with the Secret Service for more freedom inside the location. There was an imaginary line that they wanted us to observe, but as negotiating goes, they ended up asking me what I was planning to do and I wound up spearheading for the whole group of photographers. I've learned that in some situations, if you can negotiate, you get more freedom, and as long as you don't violate that, you get allowances. Like when I was behind a Secret Service Agent and I leaned over his shoulder to get a better shot, I quietly said to him, "I'm over your left shoulder," and avoided death by Secret Service Agent! I have had a lot of wonderful opportunities and many more stories that have made my career to this date a blast, with each new opportunity a great adventure! I look forward to each new day and all that only God knows what it holds.
